Windows 10 on VMware 11

Sunday, March 1st, 2015

VMware Workstation 11 with Windows 10 Technical Preview as guest OS currently has one major quirk: The “windows9-64” guest OS just won’t fit to size – while when disabling 3D acceleration, the guest OS adjusts the resolution as expected. in order to workaround the issue:

mks.enable3d = "FALSE"

Like that the whole VM feels more responsive in general – just great.

The container defragmentation and shrink somehow seem inaccessible from the GUI
while it is still possible to execute these operation through the command line interface:

cd "C:\Program Files\VMware"
vmware-vdiskmanager.exe -d C:\disk0.vmdk
vmware-vdiskmanager.exe -k C:\disk0.vmdk

4GB chunks seem to be the default for the v11 container format (when removing and adding drives one is asked to upgrade the container format, while the chunks aren’t being merged); As it seems, one cannot convert newly created disk containers with 4GB chunk-size back to the easier to handle 2GB chunk-size.

Physical SSD won’t be detected properly, unless setting them up as S-ATA.
This is important, because else they can’t be optimized – and shrinked.

In order to change the virtual network interface’s “hardware” in the .VMX file:

ethernet0.virtualDev = "e1000"
ethernet0.virtualDev = "e1000e"
ethernet0.virtualDev = "vmxnet3"

Looking forward to have these two bugs fixed –
while the workarounds should suffice meanwhile.
